Gorakhpur set to have longest railway platform in world.

As of now, Kharagpur in West Bengal has the longest platform at 1,072 metres, followed by State Street Center subway station, Chicago (1,067 metres, the longest in the US). Once it becomes operational, the platform will be able to accommodate two trains of 26 coaches each at a time.

Upbeat with the achievement, the railway management is trying to get the achievement recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records.

The city, once infamously called 'Chicago of the East' due to its gang wars, turned into a hub of Bhojpuri films over the years and is the headquarters of North Eastern Railways.

Remodeling was taken up to decongest the station which is a hub for trains going to eastern UP and Bihar. At present, the station handles around 86 pairs of trains every day.

"After the remodeling, the length of the home platform will be approximately 1,350 metres, which means it will compete to be the longest railway platform in the world," said K K Atal, general manager, NER, adding that it would help provide better and safer services to passengers by eliminating bottlenecks.

"The platform will be in use from October 7," said an official. The signalling system of the station is also being modernized to cater to increasing number of trains as Gorakhpur station serves around 54 districts in UP and Bihar and many bordering areas of Nepal.

The station caters to foreign tourists as Gorakhpur is home to many historic Buddhist sites, 18th-century Imambara and the Gita Press, a publisher of Hindu religious texts

With increased capacity, the station will cater to domestic and foreign tourists visiting the city which is the birth place of Firaq Gorakhpuri, a noted Urdu poet, workplace of famous Hindi writer Munshi Prem Chand and was named after the ascetic saint Guru Gorakhnath, a saint who popularized 'Hath Yoga', a form of yoga which concentrates on mastering natural power.

The pressure on station is expected to increase as doubling of railway lines between Lucknow and Chhapra is also underway and would be completed by March 2014.

Total number of passengers platform would increase to ten from the exist seven and can handle simultaneous movement of four trains, an official said.
